I'm 46. These 12 Health Purchases Changed My Life.
|
Read this on Dango.co When I'm buying products for my health, I have one rule, and it's simple: buy once, cry once. Sometimes the price stings up front. But when you use something almost every day for years, the price tag justifies the investment. Most importantly, high-quality products feel better to use, so you end up using them more. In today's newsletter, I want to share with you 12 health purchases that have changed my life and that you only have to buy once and keep forever.
Quick heads up: Some of the links below are affiliate links. That means if you buy something, I earn a little commission. You buy once, cry once, and I smile once :) That said, every item on the list is something I actually use, and your support helps keep this newsletter going. Thank you.
1. PowerBlock Adjustable DumbbellsI’ve owned these since the beginning of COVID. What I love about adjustable dumbbells is the small footprint. My home gym isn’t big, so we’ve tried to fit everything we need into a tight space. You click it to the weight you want, pick it up, and start lifting. Now, if I were to go back and buy these again, I'd get the NÜOBELLs, but these have lasted me so long that I’ve never needed to change. Even if you don’t have a home gym, I highly recommend them. A pair of dumbbells, a bench, and maybe a pull-up bar, and you've got everything you need for a great workout. You can check out Powerblocks over here. 2. Freak AthleteThis thing is a beast because it gives you 9 exercises in one small footprint. You can do Nordics, low back extensions, and reverse hypers on it. With an attachment, you can do leg extensions and leg curls too. Again, the small footprint is what sold me. When you’re building a home gym, you’re trying to get the most out of the space you have. I still have a gym membership, but being able to do what I do at the gym in a tiny corner of my house is a major benefit. I’ve owned it since I moved to British Columbia in 2023, and it still works like new. You can check out Freak Athlete over here. 3. Waterdrop Reverse Osmosis Water FilterWater is something our family drinks every single day. Probably yours too. This system removes impurities, including fluoride and the other stuff that comes with tap water. Then it remineralizes the water, so you still get good-quality minerals instead of drinking plain distilled water. If I did it again, I’d probably get a whole-house filtration system rather than one just for drinking water. That said, if you're using water every day, you might as well make it great. You can check out Reverse Osmosis over here. 4. Heavenly Heat Sauna
This is the purchase I’m most stoked about. The sauna is one of the most underrated health tools on the planet, especially when it comes to lowering your risk of all-cause mortality. I also use it as a third space. After work, I sit in the sun for about 15 minutes, meditate, maybe read a little bit. It's my buffer between going into family life I went with Heavenly Heat because it’s known as one of the most non-toxic saunas available. You’re sitting in a box designed to reach extreme temperatures. The last thing you want is VOCs or toxic fumes coming off the materials while you’re breathing deeply. It also heats up fast. I have the traditional heater plus heat coming from the sauna itself, so it’s ready in about 20 minutes, becoming one of my favorite daytime rituals. I know the owners personally, so I got you an extra 6% off sitewide, on top of any sales or promos they're running. Click here to check it out. 5. Roka Blue Light Blockers
I used to have horrible sleep. I’d toss and turn from one side of the bed to the other and couldn’t fall asleep. Then I started wearing these. Now I can be on my phone at night and still fall asleep fast. If you’re on screens right before you sleep, this is a game changer. Blocking blue light from hitting your eyes shortens your sleep latency, which is how long it takes you to fall asleep. Fix your light exposure, and you fix a lot of your sleep. I use Roka, but any good pair of blue light blockers will do. You can check out the Blue Light Blockers over here. 6. Jaspr HEPA Air FilterMost people don’t realize indoor air pollution can be worse than outdoor air pollution. One of the best ways to deal with that is a HEPA air filter in the rooms you spend the most time in. Living in British Columbia, we also deal with wildfire smoke, so for us this is essential. It pulls out the pollution that comes in from outside, along with most of the microplastics, and gives us confidence that we’re breathing clean air at home. The reason I use Jaspr is that I know the owner, and I've seen how obsessed he is with indoor air filtration. The point is, you want to have clean air in the rooms where you spend the most time. You can check out the Air Filter here. 7. Rogue Adjustable Bench
I've owned this for a decade, and it works like new. A bench is one of the simplest pieces of equipment in a gym, but it’s one of the most important. You want it firm and stable, and you want it to last. You don’t want to be replacing benches because screws fell out or the build quality wasn’t there. Rogue Fitness makes the most durable adjustable benches out there. They have great build quality. Highly recommend. You can check out the Rogue Adjustable Bench here. 8. BodyRox Doorway Pull-Up Bar
This one’s super cheap, and I’ve had it for about 8 years. I put it in the doorway beside my office, so anytime I pass by it, I'll do a couple of bar hangs or some pull-ups. I think hanging is one of the most underrated things you can do to reverse a lot of the dysfunction that comes from sitting for long periods I got mine on Amazon. You don’t need a fancy one, and that’s what makes it one of the cheapest yet best health purchases on the planet. You can check out the Pull-Up Bar over here. 9. Uplift Standing DeskSitting can be as bad as smoking, especially for people who sit at their desks all day. Getting a standing desk almost seems like a necessity. Several times during the day, I'll raise my desk and stand while I work. I use a talk-to-text tool called Wispr Flow to communicate with my team, take notes, and even write newsletters while I stand I use Uplift. I've had this desk for 3 years, and have had zero issues with it. You can check out the Uplift Standing Desk here. 10. Urevo Incline Walking PadAs the weather is getting colder, I'm not able to do walking meetings outside, so I'm using this a lot more. I find that walking helps me stir my creative energy and also decreases my stress later on in the day. Due to modern life, we need to find ways to get more steps in, and it's hard to do when you're sitting at a desk for 6 to 8 hours I bought this one myself, but there are many walking pads out there. Paired with a standing desk, it’s one of the best 1-2 punches for your office. You can check out the Urevo Walking Pad here. 11. Sonicare Water FlosserThis one has been crucial for my dental health. We don’t usually think about our teeth as part of our health. But inflammation that starts in the mouth can contribute to inflammation in the body. I use it every night, and it’s wild how many food bits end up in the sink. Without it, all of that would still be stuck in my teeth while I sleep. Yuck. I still floss with a regular flosser, but this does about 80% of the work. Sonicare is great, but any water flosser will work. You can check out the Water Flosser here. 12. Alaska Bear Sleep MaskI’ve tried hundreds of sleep masks, and a lot of them suck, especially for side sleepers. This one is the best. The contours around the eyes block all the light, and it’s designed well for side sleeping. I sleep on both sides, and it doesn’t bunch up or shift. The band is thin enough that it’s actually comfortable with my head on the pillow. Mine has lasted me for the past 6 years. I loved it so much I bought them for my friends and family. You can check out the Alaska Bear Sleep Mask over here. Honorable Mention: Sunday Light
I live on the west coast of Canada, and at 7 am, it's super dark. If you want to wake up, you need a lot of light. This light is one of the best ways I start my day, especially because I sit in an office. I find it to be one of my best tools for improving circadian function It comes with a pretty high price tag. So if you can’t afford it, get a 10,000 lux lamp and shine that in your face. But if you can, I think this is the next level of improving our light exposure during the day. If you want to check it out, here's my link (and $500 off) for the Sunday Light. Don't Eat The Elephant In One BiteNow, the biggest danger to seeing a list like this is thinking you need to get everything at once. Don't do that. Choose the one that makes the most sense for you right now and build up your health stack over time. Anything that improves your health, I look at as an investment, and now you have 12 items that you can buy once (and cry once) that will last you forever.
